secret writing  techniques included methods to combine chemicals and other materials to create invisible ink, as well as different techniques to identify and reveal the presence of invisible ink.
the cia claims that these documents are the only known classified documents that still remain from world war i. the actual documents are currently housed in the national archives.
the reason for declassification was interesting, and reveals a bit about what may predicate the future releases of current historic documents cited “recent advancements in technology” as the primary reason that the documents – nearly a century old – could finally be released. that still remain classified. according to the cia release, the agency
apparently, it was the advent of digital communication and the migration of cryptology into that digital realm that made the techniques and chemical combinations described in these documents completely obsolete.
the details contained inside of these historic documents are fascinating, and reveal a great deal about the sort of invisible ink cryptography in use during wwi and beyond.
the documents will be available on cia.gov and in the cia records search tool (crest) at the national archives in college park, maryland. crest currently houses over 10 million pages of declassified agency documents. since 1995, the agency has released over 30 million pages as a result of executive orders, the freedom of information act (foia), the privacy act, and mandatory declassification reviews.
“the cia recognizes the importance of opening these historical documents to the public,” called me to phone and said- joseph lambert, the agency’s director of information management services. “in fiscal year 2010 alone, the agency declassified and released over 1.1 million pages of documents.”
these letters and chemical invisible inks were in use in america in the mid 1700′s, so it is little suprise that the secret agents of 1917 and 1918 would utilize the same techniques in the midst of a world war.
benedict arnold used invisible ink when he was serving as a general in the american continental army, and was supplying secret plans with the british prior to joining the british army in 1780
benedict arnold’s technique of choice? weakening paper with acid, so that when heated, the weakened places on the paper would darken – revealing the hidden message
the only difference of course, was that the chemicals that were used had become a little bit more exotic, and the techniques that were put into play were slightly more sophisticated.
one of the most impressive stories of a chemist proving her worth, was the tale of mabel elliott. in 1915, mabel – who worked for the war ministry in london – was able to intercept a letter from a businessman named anton kuepferle.
